The Regulated Rate Option (RRO) is a horrible choice for consumers and that’s not an overstatement.
ENMAX RRO customers will see an increase of over 50% on the July RRO (approved at 27.575 cents/kWh) and is forecasted to increase again in August (forecasted at over 30 cents/kWh).
The math is clear, if you’re one of the 35% of Albertans still on the RRO, you are paying “incredibly high” prices for electricity. It’s becoming increasingly clear that the 13.5 cents/kWh deferral program that cost the government (read: YOU) $201 million was not the solution. That $201 million is being added to RRO rates until December 2024. You can easily avoid paying the added deferral recovery costs (approximately 2.6 cents/kWh) by getting off the RRO. Especially when community retailers are already offering rates below the deferral cap (13.5) AND below the NDP’s proposed RRO cap at 12 cents/kWh during the election.
The average homeowner will save about $100 on their electricity invoice in July alone just by switching to a community retailer like Bow Valley Power!
For homeowners across Alberta, you have many choices. If you don’t know where to look, just ask the Utilities Consumers Advocate for help (310-4822). Select a lower rate from any of a few dozen retailers, all lower than EPCOR, ENMAX, and Direct Energy’s RRO prices.
You don’t even have to switch to a new retailer if you don’t want to. Simply select the competitive branch from your current provider:
